Dear Pacific community,

Dr. Carey Clark and I are pleased to tell you that Dr. Carla Mariano, EdD, RN, AHN-BC, FAAIM is a recipient of the American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA) Lifetime Achievement Award.

While Dr. Mariano’s accomplishments are well known in the world of holistic nursing, they may not be among many in our Pacific College community. Dr. Mariano is a holistic nurse pioneer and truly one of our most precious living legends in holistic nursing. Our NY community members are lucky to be able to enjoy her meditations as part of their townhall meetings.

Trailblazing Contributions to Holistic Nursing and Integrative Medicine

Dr. Mariano served as President of AHNA and led the task force revising the scope and standards of holistic nursing practice. Along with serving as an AHNA board member for four years, she was also on the editorial board of Journal of Holistic Nursing.

Her involvement with integrative medicine is important to us. As a fellow of the American Association of Integrative Medicine since 2004 she created a voice for how holistic nursing practices were integrated into allopathic settings, creating pathways for nurses to practice holistically. Any expansion of holistic principles in such settings helps acceptance of us all.

Dr. Mariano is one of the few holistic nurses who has been successful at obtaining grants to support further research in holistic nursing, including integrating holistic concepts in graduate nursing education, and exploring patient response to natural healing.

More recently, Dr. Mariano led the way in holistic nursing education by developing our American Holistic Nurses Credentialing Corporation (AHNCC) endorsed RN-BSN program here at Pacific College of Health and Science. In addition to teaching distance learning classes in that program, Dr. Mariano leads the students in a holistic retreat, where the holistic nursing concepts and core competencies are closely examined and the students have a personal experience of holistic core competencies. She prepares nurses to successfully take the AHNCC examination and become board certified holistic nurses.

Dr. Mariano has truly been gift to the holistic field, and her many years of AHNA service and leadership within the organization were recognized by bestowing her this honor. It has been our honor and pleasure to work with Dr. Mariano. We hope you all have a chance to meet this distinguished pioneer of holistic principles. In the meantime, join us in congratulating her on this well-deserved honor.

Congratulations, Dr. Mariano.

Sincerely,

Dr. Carey Clark and Jack Miller
