Pell Grant awards are determined using the Student Aid Index (SAI), with eligibility calculated by subtracting the SAI from the annual maximum award; students whose calculated amount falls below the minimum are not eligible. Award amounts may change based on enrollment intensity or updates to the SAI, and institutions recalculate Pell awards through the census date or if a student does not attend all enrolled classes. Additionally, Pell Grant funds may be taxable if used for non-qualified educational expenses, and students are encouraged to consult a tax advisor in such cases.
