Carla Mariano, EdD, RN, AHN-BC, FAAIM, faculty in the PCOM Holistic Nursing Program, has been appointed to the American Nurses Association Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice Revision Workgroup. This group will be reviewing and revising the ANA Nursing Scope and Standards of Nursing Practice throughout the next 12 months.

This document describes the who, what, where, when, how, and why of the discipline of Nursing and applies to all 3.1 million professional and advanced practice registered nurses, regardless of specialty, setting, or educational preparation.  Registered nurses practicing in the United States use the Nursing Scope and Standards to inform their thinking and decision-making and guide their practice.  The Scope provides a complete picture of the dynamic and complex practice of nursing and its evolving boundaries and membership.  The Standards are authoritative statements of the duties and expectations that all registered nurses, regardless of role, population, or specialty, are expected to perform competently.  The Nursing Scope and Standards advise the nursing profession, other healthcare providers and disciplines, employers, administrators, third-party payers, legislators, regulators, and the public about the unique scope of knowledge and the standards of practice and professional performance of a nurse.
