Mariano, Carla, EdD, RN, AHN-BC, FAAIM

Dr. Mariano developed and is immediate past Coordinator of the Advanced Practice Adult Holistic Nurse Practitioner Program in the College of Nursing at New York University and developed the Bachelor of Science Holistic Nursing Program at Pacific College of Oriental Medicine. Dr. Mariano was integrally involved with the American Holistic Nurses Association in developing the Scope and Standards of Practice for holistic nurses and spearheaded the initiative which gave holistic nursing official recognition by the American Nurses Association as a distinct Specialty within the discipline of nursing. She has published widely and presented nationally and internationally on holistic nursing including Nursing and Holistic Ethics, Research in Holistic Nursing, Holistic Healing and the Advanced Practice Nurse, Complementary/Alternative Therapies in End of Life Care, Self-Care, Issues and Trends in Holistic Nursing, Holistic Nursing Education, and a forthcoming book Holism in Nursing: An Evolutionary Journey.

Dr. Mariano has been a member of the editorial review board of Journal of Holistic Nursing and Advances in Nursing Science. She has conducted qualitative research on the Nature of Natural Healing and Clients’ Responses to Alternative/Complementary Modalities as well as qualitative research in the fields of gerontology and interdisciplinary collaboration. She has taught courses on Approaches to Qualitative Inquiry, Theoretical Foundations of Holistic Nursing; The Nurse as Facilitator of Healing, Complementary/Alternative/Integrative Modalities; Nursing Research; Critical Thinking; Therapeutic Interactions; and Crisis Theory and Intervention. In addition to her co-authored book, Research in Nursing and Health: Understanding and Using Quantitative and Qualitative Methods, Dr. Mariano has numerous publications and presentations on the qualitative research process; interdisciplinary collaboration; and aging.

Dr. Mariano is Past-President of the American Holistic Nurses Association. She chaired the Values and Competencies Task Force of the National Education Dialogue, the White House Commission on Integrative Health Care.
