PCOM Librarian Appointed Secretary of the Friends of NLM Board of Directors

Our very own Naomi Broering, Dean of Libraries at Pacific College of Oriental Medicine (PCOM) in SD, and Medical Library Association (MLA) past president has been a charter member of the Friends of the National Library of Medicine (FNLM) since 1986.

Naomi-HeadshotShe sponsored several FNLM Computers in healthcare conferences from 1990 – 93 at Georgetown University Medical Center, organized FNLM events during MLA annual meetings for numerous years, and served as editor of the FNLM online newsletter from 2000 to 2004. Most recently, she served on the FNLM Publications, advisory panel on MedlinePlus Magazine, and Membership Nominations Committee.  As secretary, Naomi is a member of the FNLM Executive Committee, which meets regularly to plan activities and special collaborative events with the NLM Director, Dr. Donald A.B. Lindberg and staff.

The FNLM Board is comprised of prestigious leaders in academic medicine, scholarly publishing, and the healthcare arena.  PCOM is well served by Naomi’s presence and volunteer efforts on the Board for many years.  Ms. Carla Funk, MLA Exec Dir & FNLM Board Liaison and Naomi Broering are working together to promote the role and involvement of Medical Librarians at multiple levels with the Friends of NLM.  Plans are to increase awareness and emphasize the medical informatics efforts of librarians to improve health care.

2012 FNLM Awards Gala and Honors

The Annual FNLM Awards Gala 2012 is scheduled to held on Tuesday, September 11th in Washington DC at the rooftop garden overlooking the US Capital on 101 Constitution Ave. A highlight of the Gala is the Michael E. DeBakey Library Outreach Library Services Award, which will be presented to Anna Ercoli Schnitzer, MLIS, Disabilities Librarian, Taubman Health Sciences Library, University of Michigan.

Other awards are:

  • Paul G. Rogers Public Service Award — The Honorable John Edward Porter, Former U.S. Congressman from Illinois, Chair of Research! America and Vice-Chair of the Foundation for the NIH
  • Distinguished Medical Science Award — Alfred Sommer, MD, MHS, Professor, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health
  • Distinguished Health Communications Award — Karen Hunter, Senior Vice President, Global Academic & Customer Relations, Elsevier
