Course Description

This 14-hour course provides students with an introduction to making a cooling Thai herbal liniment, infused with oils and balms to use in conjunction with hands-on therapy. Students will learn the herbs' tastes, temperatures, and actions as per Thai medical theory. Participants will leave the course with a cooling and warming balm, a cooling tincture, and drawing oil to be used on its own or with therapeutic scraping. All herbs, oils, and containers will be provided.

Johanna Vargas, LMT, BCTMB, arrived at bodywork through her movement arts practices. With over two decades of movement-based disciplines, she has ample first-hand experience with muscular pain. Her history of successfully identifying, resolving and preventing its recurrence in her own body informs and distinguishes her treatments. As an avid yoga and meditation practitioner since adolescence, it is no wonder that she was drawn to practicing Thai massage. After nearly a decade of martial arts study, the combination of receptive stillness, physical manipulation and movement linked via breath and intention was a natural fit. She has been teaching movement for the past twelve years and bodywork, self-inquiry and self-care techniques for the past six, at venues including Concordia University Chicago, Master S.H. Yu Martial Arts, Blue Lotus Thai Healing Arts, Pacific College of Oriental Medicine and Aloft Circus Arts. She continues her study of Thai medical theory to create effective treatments with her clients and to advance and advocate for bodywork professionals’ recognition as a part of health care. She runs a private practice in Chicago, is currently completing her personal training certification with a specialty in corrective exercises and still carves out time to create commissioned, original works of art.
