Hal became interested in Chinese medicine as a result of his martial art studies. Spending more than 20 years learning and assistant teaching martial arts earned him instructor (Sifu) levels in Hung Ga kung fu (Hung Family Shaolin) under Sifu Frank Yee, Xing Yi Quan (Form-Will Boxing) and Ba Gua Zhang (Eight Trigram Palm) styles of Chinese martial arts, under Sifu Tom Bisio. Under Tom Bisio, he pursued his interest in Chinese medicine since 1995, beginning with a year-long class in Tui Na. Later, he continued his studies in Tui Na and manipulation under both Tom Bisio and Frank Butler, co-founders of the Zheng Gu Tui Na method. Hal is the author of Pronunciation of Chinese Medicine Terms in Mandarin and Cantonese.
