Doctorate in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (San Diego)

In 2002, the Accreditation Commission of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM) approved Pacific College to begin doctoral level training at its San Diego campus. Pacific College has contributed to the development of doctoral standards for the profession for over ten years. Jack Miller, the college’s president, was the chair of the Doctoral Committee of the Council of Colleges of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (CCAOM). He coordinated the cooperative efforts of numerous of college administrators, practitioners, and scholars as they developed, debated and refined what eventually led to the Council’s proposal to ACAOM. The Doctoral Committee envisioned colleges developing programs that utilize regional resources and reflect institutional strengths and interests, while attracting cohorts of uniquely qualified students who share those interests. This promises to be an exciting time for the profession.

Since the doctorate is not required for licensure to practice in any state, it has been interesting to experience a curriculum and student body that are, for lack of a better term, entirely voluntary. That is, students will participate, not to gain entrance to a profession, but to become its leaders. Because of the small class sizes, the institution offers the programs as labors of love. Pacific College has looked forward to this adventure for over a decade.

Pacific’s Doctorate of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine offers a six- semester, 1267.5 hour, 61.5 credit program of study. It is composed of a series of courses in five tracks in which each doctoral fellow completes 49 didactic and clinic courses. The five tracks are:

Track 1: Family Medicine
Track 2: Application of Chinese Classics
Track 3: Chinese Medical Chinese Language
Track 4: Evidence-Based Medicine
Track 5: Clinical Studies

The overarching purpose of the proposed doctoral program is to foster self-directed learning and critical thinking within the framework of traditional Chinese medicine until it becomes an unshakeable habit and a defining characteristic of the graduate's professionalism.  It further strives to broaden and deepen the practitioner's knowledge and skills in patient care.

To accomplish this and its specific educational objectives, Pacific College has assembled an expert faculty to present an inspiring curriculum based on the integration of biomedicine with the modern and Classical application of Chinese Medicine. These topics are supported by Chinese medical language studies, research, and advanced clinical training.

Tuition:

• $310 for didactic credit
• $620 for clinical credit
