San Diego Hospice
"Before I came to PCOM, I was a Licensed Nurse. When I worked in
hospitals or nursing homes, I had been responsible for over 50 patients
during one shift. Feeling unsatisfied with the quality of the health care
being provided to these patients, I was drawn to the field of acupuncture.
I signed up for the shift at San Diego Hospice because of an Intern's
experience I had read during my first year. The amount of growth the student
had made through his rotation was unparalleled to all the exposure I had
at school. I knew that there would be many lessons waiting for me at Hospice.
Hospice is a good experience for anyone who is interested in geriatrics,
internal medicine or working in a multi-disciplinary medical setting.
You have the opportunity to see advanced stages of disease and the most
interesting pulses: choppy, long, prison, pounding, abrupt, racing. The
medical staff at Hospice is friendly and open to answering any questions
you may have. They truly make you feel like a part of the team.
At Hospice, you learn how to help patients and their families during a
time of need and vulnerability. You offer caring, compassion, and healing
touch to patients who are in excruciating pain. Often, the patient uses
the relief you provide as an opportunity to say good bye to their loved
ones. You become intimately involved in patients' lives very quickly,
not knowing if they will still be there when you return for your next
shift.
During one of my first days at Hospice, I treated an elderly, jaundiced
man. Sitting next to him was his wife, daughter, and a social worker.
As the daughter sang and played the guitar by her father's bedside, we
treated each of them with acupuncture. A calm came over the room, allowing
us all a moment to heal and appreciate the gift of life. It was the most
magical healing experience I have ever been a part of. I would like for
all students to be able to receive this gift, and highly recommend the
experience at Hospice."
