San Diego Hospice
San Diego Hospice provides the unique opportunity of working with terminally
ill patients in collaboration with physicians, nurses, social workers,
chaplains and bereavement counselors in a beautiful facility administering
palliative medical care. The Hospice has a department of complimentary
medicine using aromatherapy, touch for healing techniques and acupuncture.
A research project is currently being conducted on the efficacy of TCM
on the Quality of Life of terminally ill patients. PCOM students at SD
Hospice are asked to collaborate with this research project on an ongoing
basis.
The general work at Hospice is both challenging and rewarding. The pace
is slow and relaxed with the emphasis on the quality of time spent with
each patient. A bereavement counselor is provided a few times per rotation
to help PCOM students work through grief and other emotional issues that
arise as a result of working with the terminally ill. Students may work
in pairs, but are expected to be able to work fairly autonomously. At
the end of the rotation the students as a group give an oral presentation
to the medical staff.
