Pacific College Interns Offer Acupuncture at St. Vincent’s Hospital Manhattan

Pacific College of Oriental Medicine’s New York campus will begin new weekly internships at the St. Vincent’s Hospital Manhattan Comprehensive Cancer Center on January 29 and at the St. Vincent’s HIV Center on January 26.

The Cancer Center internship will consist of one licensed acupuncturist and three Pacific College assistants, while the internship at the HIV Center will be comprised of one licensed acupuncturist and five Pacific College interns. Jean Fitzgerald, Director of Clinical Services at Pacific’s New York branch, estimates that the Cancer Center internship will treat three patients per week, while the HIV Center internship will treat approximately 15.

Gina Lepore, Chief Operating Officer of Pacific’s New York branch, had been involved in negotiations with Saint Vincent Catholic Medical Centers since mid-summer of 2003. According to Lepore, two Pacific College students employed at St. Vincent’s first came up with ideas for the internships.

“Our students have been asking for more integration with Western medical hospitals, and I have always asked students to come to me with ideas about facilities we might send students,” Lepore said. “There’s a lot of excitement and enthusiasm here [about the opportunities at St. Vincent’s].”

According to Lepore, the new internships offer exciting new prospects for both Pacific College students and the field of Oriental medicine.

“These internships will further our conversation with the Western medical community,” Lepore said. “If someone can get their treatment at the hospital and lessen the side effects with Chinese medicine, we’re demonstrating how both types of medicine can work together.”
