Pacific College Board Member Elected President
of International Professional School of Bodywork
Psychologist and licensed acupuncturist Richard Gold was
elected president of the International Professional School of Bodywork
(IPSB) on January 1, 2004.
As President of IPSB, Gold will work primarily in the areas of faculty
development and faculty expansion.
“I hope to be able to represent IPSB positively in the community
with my work as a teacher, practitioner and author,” Gold said.
“IPSB is a cutting edge school and personal growth institute. I
am proud to be in a leadership role there.”
Gold has played critical roles in the development of both IPSB and Pacific
College of Oriental Medicine since the early 1980s. He has been on the
Board of Directors at IPSB since 1983, and was made Chairman of the Board
in 2001. In 1986, Gold became a founding Board member and professor at
Pacific College in San Diego. In 1992, he was also a founding Board member
of Pacific’s New York branch.
In addition to his leadership roles at IPSB and Pacific College, Gold
currently teaches Thai Massage and Seitai Shiatsu at both schools.
“I like sharing healing skills that I know help relieve human suffering
and promote the development and growth of the student,” Gold said.
“I think touch is vital to human survival and comfort. Touch is
a core human need. Conscious touch facilitates wholeness.”
This passion for his practice has made Gold a popular speaker at Pacific
College’s annual Symposium. Students who enroll in Gold’s
classes are fortunate enough to study with a faculty member who is considered
a leading expert in traditional Oriental body therapies. In 1979, Gold
studied at Xinhua Hospital in Shanghai, and in 1986, he apprenticed with
Seitai Shiatsu Master Kyoshi Kato. In both 1988, 1989 and 1992, Gold studied
Nuad Bo’Rarn, the traditional medical massage of Thailand, at the
Old Medicine Hospital in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
In recognition of his education and skill, Gold was elected to the National
Advisory Board of the American Oriental Body Therapy Association in 1993
representing expertise in Thai massage.
In addition to being a popular teacher and maintaining a private practice
in San Diego, Gold is also a published author. He has had a chapter published
in the prestigious manual, “Acupuncture in Practice,” and
has published his own book, titled “Thai Massage: A Traditional
Medical Technique.” Gold also boasts three instructional videos,
titled “Nuad Bo’Rarn, Tradition Thailand Medical Massage;”
“Seitai Shiatsu;” and “Nuad Bo’Rarn, Traditional
Thai Massage.”
Through his work at Pacific College, Gold has also led pioneering research
efforts. In 1991, he created the protocol for an in-house study of the
effect if acupuncture on tinnitus. The following year, Gold began a study
of the effect of acupuncture and herbs on PMS symptoms, which was expanded
and funded by the National Institute of Health in 1994. More recently,
Gold wrote a grant proposal and ran a study researching the effect of
barley juice extract on Irritable Bowel Syndrome in 1999.
