Pacific College Donates to Breast Cancer 3-Day

In support of the fight against breast cancer, Pacific College of Oriental Medicine has donated $200 and free T-shirts to faculty member Shelly Krahn for her participation in the annual Breast Cancer 3-Day on November 21-23.

Approximately 3,000 participants will walk an average of 20 miles a day during the 3-Day, raising both awareness of breast cancer and critical funding for breast cancer research. With each participant raising a minimum of $2,000, it is projected that the 2003-2004 Breast Cancer 3-Day series will generate more than $50 million.

According to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, more than 200,000 women and men will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, and nearly 40,000 will lose their lives to the disease. This translates as a diagnosis of breast cancer every three minutes, and a death from the disease every 13 minutes.

Krahn, a licensed acupuncturist in San Diego, has personal experience with breast cancer. Her mother-in-law is a breast cancer survivor, and her aunt is currently struggling with Stage 4 of the disease.

" Walking that far is going to be no simple feat for me," Krahn said. "I'm going to have to train and get in shape. But I'm excited that I can finally do something this big in the fight against breast cancer. I'll be keeping all of my donors in mind, and in my heart, as I walk 60 miles for the Breast Cancer 3-Day this November."

Pacific College President Jack Miller agreed that breast cancer is an important issue and was happy to support both research about the disease and Krahn’s personal involvement.
"Oriental medicine has a long tradition of treating women’s health issues," Miller said. "The fight against breast cancer is an important cause, so of course we were more than happy to contribute."
