Winner of PCOM T-Shirt Contest Announced

Kenneth Hoffman, a third-year student at the New York branch of the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine (PCOM), was selected as the winner of the 2003 PCOM T-Shirt Art Contest.

The contest was designed to update the look of the College’s shirts worn by students, staff, faculty and alumni. The entries had to reflect the theme of the college’s Oriental medicine program and include the name "Pacific College of Oriental Medicine" or "PCOM."

Hoffman said the design took him and his wife only a couple of weeks to create. "We liked the idea of the modern typeface melded with the more natural lines of the bamboo and the classic yin-yang design," Hoffman said.

According to Gina Rubbo, admissions counselor and one of the 16 judges from the three Pacific College campuses, those features were exactly why Hoffman’s creation was chosen over the six other entries. "It was a unanimous choice because it reflected the medicine," Rubbo said. "It was chosen for its visual appeal, and it’s a good representation for PCOM." According to Rubbo, the T-shirts will be available by the end of June.

In addition to Hoffman’s winning artwork and photo being displayed at the San Diego campus, he will also receive recognition in the college’s newspaper, Oriental Medicine, a $125 bookstore gift certificate; two days free at the annual Pacific Symposium; and of course, a free T-shirt.

Hoffman, who had been a martial arts instructor for 13 years before becoming a Pacific College student, will graduate this spring, and said he plans to open his own full-time clinic complete with herbal pharmacy. "It will be an integrative program with educational facilities," Hoffman said. "I’m very excited about it."
