Pacific College Academic Dean Receives Prestigious AOA Award

Dr. Carl Miller, academic dean of the New York campus of the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine and a faculty member at Cornell University, has been awarded the prestigious Volunteer Clinical Faculty Award of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society of Cornell University.

The award recognizes volunteer faculty members who are dedicated to teaching and patient care. The recipient of the award is chosen each year by the graduating class of Cornell Medical School.

This latest recognition is just one of many awards Dr. Miller has received. In 2001, he was given the Humanism in Internal Medicine Award from the American Association of Medical Colleges and Pfizer Mentorship Program, the Weill Medical College Teaching Award, and the Weill Medical College of Cornell University-Senior List Teaching Award. In 2000 Dr. Miller also received the Charles L. Bardes, M.D. Teaching Award from Cornell Medical School, the Weill Medical College of Cornell University-Senior List Teaching Award, and the Mentorship and Leadership Award from the Black and Latino Biomedical Association of Cornell University.

When asked about his work with Pacific College, Dr. Miller said, "It’s a great institution. I like the idea of being at the forefront of the effort to put Oriental medicine forward. I have always desired to bring together Western and TCM and have referred my private patients to TCM practitioners since 1980."

Dr. Miller started at Pacific College in September of 2000 when he organized its pure physiology course. In the summer of 2002, he became the chair of the biomedical sciences department until being promoted to academic dean in January of 2003. As academic dean of Pacific College, Dr. Miller is in charge of faculty training and recruitment, student advising, curriculum coordination, and addressing academic concerns or changes.

According to Miller, being a faculty member of both Cornell and Pacific College are equally wonderful experiences. "If you’re dedicated to medicine, any aspect of medicine is equal in my eyes because it all helps the people," Miller said.

Dr. Miller received his MD degree is from Cornell University Medical College, was trained at Cornell's New York Presbyterian Hospital from 1975-1978 in Internal medicine, and completed a Fellowship in Digestive Diseases at Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in NYC.

In addition to his role as Academic Dean at Pacific College, Miller is a faculty member at Cornell University. Here he teaches first, second and third year medical students in areas of Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology, as well as Residents and Fellows in areas of Internal Medicine and Digestive Diseases.
