This course guides students through making and using Thai herbal compresses in their bodywork treatments. Students learn the properties of herbs traditionally used in Thai herbal compresses, how to form three different types of compress and how to massage the body using the compresses.

Students will be able to:

  • List properties of herbs used in Thai compresses
  • List herbal recipes for four different types of compress and herbal substitutions
  • Recognize contraindications to the moist heat created by the compress
  • Prepare (crushing, grinding, etc) herbs for use in compresses
  • Pack and tie 2 traditional Thai herbal balls
  • Pack and wrap a fresh herbal bundle
  • Pack and apply an herbal wrap
  • Properly steam the compresses
  • Assemble a safe and efficient work tray from which to handle and rotate the hot compresses
  • Practice Thai massage techniques using the compresses in supine, prone, and side-lying
  • Practice techniques using the compresses in seated
  • Locate reputable sources for bulk, organic herbs for use in compresses
