Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery
Interlibrary Loans/Document Delivery Services - The Pacific College of Oriental Medicine Library is a member of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM) and is part of the DOCLINE interlibrary loan system through the National Library of Medicine (NLM) at the NIH. This new service agreement enables the PCOM library to provide our users with journal articles from citations in Pub Med and other sources that are not in the PCOM library collection. The Library accepts ILL requests of materials not available here for students, faculty and staff affiliated with PCOM. The NN/LM lending library fees range between $11 to $15 per journal article or book. Click here for ILL form. Loansome Doc capabilities can be made for PCOM faculty and alumni upon request. PCOM ILL services are available to other libraries or users for an $11 fee per item. Delivery is through e-mail or fax, and payment can be made through the EFTS payment mechanism. Requests may be made by email, fax or DOCLINE (CAUJKV). FAX and RUSH services are available for an additional $5.00 fee.

The Library Study and Research Center (SD)
Located in the front of the Library reading room has study tables and book stacks including built-in cabinets for important journal article literature. The print collections of over 5,500 items includes over 3,000 books, over 70 journal titles, 1,500 special collection books, numerous research papers, and a non-print collection of over 650 items. The major Reference and Reserve books are located at the Reference/Circulation Desk. The main medical collection is located in the open stacks. There is an Unclassified Oriental Medicine Collection at the end of the main collection. The Library also has a Special Collection of Chinese language monographs, which is located in the third stack range. The Journals are in the last two ranges, and special research article bins are in the built-in cabinets.
The Computer Media Center (SD)
There are ten computers (PC and Macintosh), and two video machines, plus audio tape players for student use. The Audio/Media collections are located on the back shelves in the library. Pacific College of Oriental Medicine provides students with free e-mail service. To obtain your password, complete an application in the front office. The computers can be used for Internet access to health information and other related web sites and word processing. The Library has a small software CD collection, including the cumulated Journal of Chinese Medicine, which are pre-installed in the computers. Computer Use Time is limited to 30 minutes when others are waiting for a machine.
PCOM Library Online Catalog
There is a dedicated computer at the front desk for public access to the Library’s online catalog. The Library’s online catalog includes the collections of books, journals, videos, audiotapes and special reference research papers. It can also be accessed on the library’s computers and from home computers through the Internet. On the Online Catalog, you can enter, title, author or keyword to search for Library materials. Don’t forget to click off the exact button, if you are uncertain of the title or spelling of authors. The Library staff can assist you finding materials or in learning how to use the system. The web page is continually updated and revised. Watch for our announcements.
Books-Print Collections
Books are cataloged according to the Library of Congress (LC) classification system. Books may be identified by the LC call numbers on their spine labels. The call number is the book’s address within the collection. You may use the card catalog to look up a book’s author, title, or subject heading. Write down the call number found in the upper left-hand corner of the card. The LC Subject Headings Books are kept at the Reference/Circulation Desk. Books are arranged on the shelves by their call numbers.
Required texts
Required and recommended texts for each semester are available in the Library at the Reference/Circulation Desk. They are shelved separately from the rest of the collection and marked with a green sticker above the spine label. If the Library has more than one copy, the extra copies will circulate and can be borrowed.
Periodicals/Journals
Current and historical journals of Chinese medicine, alternative therapies, and biomedicine are located in the back two ranges of the Library. They are arranged in alphabetical order by title. Journals DO NOT circulate. You may make copies of any journal article you need.
Periodical/Journal Articles
The library maintains a special collection of important research articles and brochures. They are located in the Cabinets left of the front entrance in black Library file boxes. The papers are arranged alphabetically. Just open the cabinet doors to find the materials you need to use in the library. They do NOT circulate, but you may copy the articles.
Unclassified Oriental Medicine Book Collection (Uncatalogued)
There is a unique collection of Oriental medicine books that do not have Library of Congress call numbers. They are arranged alphabetically by title following the end of the cataloged books. There are temporary title cards in the card catalog with basic information for each of these books.
Chinese Language Collection
A limited number of texts written in Mandarin Chinese are available in the library. The Dr. Richard Yeh collection of Chinese medical classics was recently donated to the College. The library also collects a Chinese language periodical, Chinese Medical Report.
Vertical Files
The 4-drawer filing cabinet contains miscellaneous folders of material on a variety of subjects. These include individual journal articles, reports, pamphlets, brochures, and catalogs. The folders are arranged alphabetically. These materials do NOT circulate.
Student Research Papers
Research papers written by upper division students are available for checkout. These can be good sources of bibliographies on subjects you may be researching. A list of titles is available at the card catalog.
Course Syllabi
Course syllabi are available for student use at the Front Desk of the Library in a large binder. This binder does not circulate, but students can ask the Library Assistant’s permission to make photocopies. Copies cost .10 cents per page.
Non-Print Collections
These
are listed in a large binder at the Front Desk as well as individually in the Online Catalog.
Audio/Video tapes
Videotapes are arranged by number on the video stack shelves in the back of the library.. Audiocassette tape sets (i.e., Pacific Symposium) are arranged by date on the audio shelf. An individual audiocassette collection is are arranged by number on the wall-mounted cassette rack. Two televisions with VCRs and headphones and two audio tape players with headphones are available for use in the library. Lists of audio and videotape titles are at the front desk.
CD Software Collection
The library has a small CD collection of journals and study materials, which can be requested at the Reference/Circulation desk.
Clinic Checkouts
If you are working in the Clinic as an Intern and need a reference book from the Library, you may check it out for the duration of your shift. You must sign your name and the book’s title on the Momentary Check-out form at the Circulation Desk. The book must be returned at the end of your shift.
Printing
All student computers in the library are connected to a laser printer. The cost of printing is $.10 per page. Print materials can be picked-up and paid for at the Reference/Circulation Desk.
Copies
A photocopy machine is available in the library. The cost of copies is $.10 per page.
Borrowing Privileges-Checkout
All enrolled students and faculty have borrowing privileges. Maximum check-out is three (3) books at a time for a 2-week period or 2 audio or videotapes at a time for a 1-week period.Books, audio and videotapes may be renewed once. Reference materials do NOT circulate.
Overdue Fines
Overdue fines are $0.25 per day for books and $0.50 per day for audio and videotapes. Weekends are included in calculating fines. If an item is lost, you will be assessed a fine of $15.00 PLUS the cost of replacing the item.All fines must be paid before you will be allowed to check out additional items. Also, be aware that unpaid fines can lead to denial of registration, transcripts, or any other administrative request. When returning materials, always ask the staff member to verify that the returned item has been recorded. Materials may also be returned in the Book Return box located in front of the Library. After hour returns can be pushed through the mail slot in the front door.
Miscellaneous
• Leave all library materials either on the re-shelve cart next to the Circulation Desk or on the library study tables.
• The faculty conference room can be reserved for group study, when not in use by faculty or for administrative use. Inquire at the front desk.

No food items or open cups are allowed under any circumstances in the library. Water bottles or secure commuter-type cups are allowed in the library.

The Librarian and the Student Assistants are here to help you. Please feel free to approach them with any questions or suggestions you may have. The staff will provide special assistance to handicapped library users.
