San Diego Healing Arts Festival:
On Saturday, May 15th, Student Council will be hosting the 1st Annual San Diego Healing Arts Festival on Balboa Park’s War Memorial Lawn (Park Blvd. & Zoo Dr.) Several volunteer positions still need to be filled for this event to be a success. We’re looking for interns to do ‘OM Consultations’ and massage students to perform 10 minute chair protocols, both for clinical shift and patient credit. We also need any RN’s and EMT’s to volunteer in our medical tent. Other positions include clean-up crew on Sunday and Safety/ Security staff. Come to the volunteer meeting at 5 PM on May 12th for more info or e-mail studentcouncil-sd@pacificcollege.edu
SC $80 Fall Tuition Increase Proposal:
The Student Council has proposed an additional $80 annual tuition fee, payable each Fall semester to go towards signing up each student in (1) State and (1) National OM Professional organization of their choice. The membership fee for this is generally $25-30 each. Additionally, $20 would go to the California Acupuncture Political Action Committee (Acu-PAC) and $10 would go to the new PCOM Alumni Association. As the chiropractic field has shown us, this is a great way to build our political strength and pay for lobbyists on our behalf. If you’re shelling out $40K for school, what’s another $80/ year to make sure the profession still exists when you get out? Discussions will continue all this term at the SC Meetings.
Used Book Sale:
We host a Used Book Sale on the first Wednesday-Friday of each term. This is a great opportunity for students to sell off their old texts and find their new ones at reduced prices. Look for the booth in the student lounge from 10-5 pm and drop off your old texts for us to sell. You set the prices so they’re all non-negotiable and the Student Council keeps 10%. Volunteers get first crack at all the new texts that arrive, so sign up with Michelle Coltart (Treasurer) to work ASAP!
China Scholarship Winner:
Congratulations again to Jeannie Bianchi for winning the Student Council China study scholarship. Jeannie is spending this break in Cheng Du, China with a group of students studying with Dr. Tantan Huang in a hospital. Her $500 award winning essay can be viewed on-line here.
Student Health Insurance:
Student Council is meeting with representatives from other California
OM schools this week to discuss group health insurance options. We need
approximately 300 students together to form a group plan and hope to have
some ideas in the next few weeks. Individual options are currently available
through www.ehealthinsurance.com. For more information contact Supak Chenhansa.
Campus Lecture Series:
This year we’ll continue to bring you some of the biggest
names in Chinese Medicine. Look for lectures this March from Donna Keefe
on “The treatment of Infertility w/ TCM" and next term from
Neil Gumenick from the Five Elements School in Los Angeles. Also, come
check out the “Metagenics” free lunchtime lectures on the
first Tuesday of each month in the lounge.
Vending Solutions:
We’ve just set up accounts with the distributors for Henry’s
and Whole Foods in an effort to bring healthier vending options to campus.
We should be ready to place our first order in the next few weeks. If
you have any suggestions or requests, leave a note in the Student Council
mailbox or Email
us. Contact Vig Swaminathan for more information.
Campus Recycling:
Due to student non-compliance with the requested recycling policy,
the blue bins in the classrooms have been removed. Paper recycling is
still available in the library by the photocopier. The main recycling
in the kitchen can hold cans, bottles, and paper.

Potential State Budget Cuts
As Donna Arduin, expert auditor, and Governor-elect Schwarzenegger find
fewer items to cut from our State budget, Medi-Cal comes nearer to the
chopping block. Business Weekly reports that the 10.5 Billion budget for
Medi-Cal, may have to stand some trimming, Senate Republicans suggest,
of the "optional benefits" such as acupuncture, which could
save $693 million a year. Please, contact your State Legislators immediately
and voice your opinions on this.
Little Hoover Commission
All students are encouraged to answer the questions for this study through
CSOMA’s
web site. "On the request of the Legislature, the Little Hoover
Commission is reviewing the regulation of acupuncture in California. SB
1951 and AB 1943requested that the Commission make recommendations on
specific issues by September 2004… Key issues include scope of practice,
educational requirements and examinations… As with all Commission
studies, public input will be important to the outcome of this study,
and is encouraged to be in written form addressing the specific issues
that the Commission is studying, per SB 1951 and AB 1943." Further
reading from the source of the quote is found at: http://www.lhc.ca.gov/lhc.html
PCOM Art Contest
Congratulations to Carrie Neel-Parker (1st Place), Desiree Paus (2nd Place),
and Frank Caruso (3rd Place) for their entries in this year’s Art
Contest. All students were invited to submit entries that reflected in
some way upon this year’s theme, "Growth". Carrie’s
prize-winning construction was a sculpture of a woman encrusted in Chinese
herbs and plants.
Send Your Old Textbooks to India
PCOM is accepting gently used textbooks to be donated to the Acupuncture
Institute of Ananda Nagar in India. This college lacks many of the teaching
resources we in America take for granted, including classrooms, clinical
facilities and supplies, textbooks, models, etc. Pacific College has kindly
donated some texts from its library and bookstore, and encourages any
interested students to donate their used textbooks as well. We are specifically
looking for texts on acupuncture point location and OM theory. Any and
all contributions are greatly appreciated and may be dropped off in the
front administration office.
