Student Council News & Updates
Town Hall Meeting at CHA Conference: Acupuncturists and activists both gathered on 6/20 at the first of what promises to be quarterly open forum meetings that will allow us to better organize the practitioners in San Diego. Originally a CSOMA sponsored event in hopes of forming a local chapter for them in SD, this meeting became an introduction of two new organizations: FAR, (Foundation for Acupuncture Research) and AIMS, (Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine Society) the only OM political organization in California which retains a lobbyist. Look for updates through the CSOMA mailing list and the Student Council board in the lounge.
SC $80 Fall Tuition Increase Proposal: We have proposed an additional $80 annual tuition fee, payable each Fall semester to go towards signing up each student in (1) State and (1) National OM Professional organization of their choice. The membership fee for this is generally $25-30 each. Additionally, $20 would go to a political organization to hire a lobbyist on our behalf and $10 would go to the new PCOM Alumni Association. Discussions continue all this term at the SC Meetings.
Play, Ball!: Once again, SC will be taking you out to the ballgame, this time on our premier conquest of Petco Park, Saturday, July 10th for the 1:05 PM game against the Colorado Rockies. We have upper deck seats and will be going out on the town following the game. The cost will be only $5 per person. Friends and Family are welcome but first opened to students. Sign-up sheet available now on the board in the lounge.
2nd Annual San Diego Healing Arts Festival: This has tentatively been scheduled for May 14th, 2005 at the War Memorial Lawn in Balboa Park. Alternate venues are being researched. Several National touring artists and corporate sponsorships are being sought. Any ideas or contacts gladly welcomed. If you want to help out, please contact Ryan Altman. SC and PCOM investment decisions pending, to be made by the next SC board. More at the Student Council meeting in July.
Elections: Student Council officer elections for the 2004-2005 term will take place at the final meeting of the Summer on Thursday, July 22nd. Positions of President, V.P., Secretary, Treasurer, and Floating Rep. are all available for nominations/ declarations.

Congratulations to the New Student Council officers for 2004.

Jamie Boyd – Secretary; Michelle Coltart – Treasurer; Matt
Alavi – Floating Representative; Robert Onstine – Floating
Representative. New York Campus: Corey Distasio - President; Dorothy Wong

Student Health Insurance:
Student Council is still researching the options for Student
Health coverage. We need approximately 300 students together to form a
group plan. We’re looking into the possibilities of joining with
other OM colleges in California through the CSOMA-Student Organization
to bring the total number of students up. The organizer of this effort
has just moved to New York so if you’d like to help on this project,
please contact Supak Chenhansa.
Campus Lecture Series:
This term we’ll continue to bring you some of the biggest
names in Chinese Medicine. Look for lectures this term from Dr. Richard
Tan and Donna Keefe and next term from Neil Gumenick from the Five Elements
School in Los Angeles.
Vending Solutions:
We’ve just leased an additional vending machine which we’ll
be able to stock ourselves with healthier snack options. There’s
only space for 20 items and we’d like to hear what you’d prefer.
Drop a note in the Student Council mailbox or online at studentcouncil-sd@pacificcollege.edu
Campus Recycling:
Blue recycling bins in the classes should ONLY be used for paper. Please
remember to drop your cans and bottles in the bin in the lounge. Also
try to wash out your cans and bottles and remove all staples and clips
from your paper goods. Also note that Styrofoam is not recyclable on campus.
Potential State Budget Cuts
As Donna Arduin, expert auditor, and Governor-elect Schwarzenegger find
fewer items to cut from our State budget, Medi-Cal comes nearer to the
chopping block. Business Weekly reports that the 10.5 Billion budget for
Medi-Cal, may have to stand some trimming, Senate Republicans suggest,
of the "optional benefits" such as acupuncture, which could
save $693 million a year. Please, contact your State Legislators immediately
and voice your opinions on this.
Little Hoover Commission
All students are encouraged to answer the questions for this study through
CSOMA’s
web site. "On the request of the Legislature, the Little Hoover
Commission is reviewing the regulation of acupuncture in California. SB
1951 and AB 1943requested that the Commission make recommendations on
specific issues by September 2004… Key issues include scope of practice,
educational requirements and examinations… As with all Commission
studies, public input will be important to the outcome of this study,
and is encouraged to be in written form addressing the specific issues
that the Commission is studying, per SB 1951 and AB 1943." Further
reading from the source of the quote is found at: http://www.lhc.ca.gov/lhc.html
PCOM Art Contest
Congratulations to Carrie Neel-Parker (1st Place), Desiree Paus (2nd Place),
and Frank Caruso (3rd Place) for their entries in this year’s Art
Contest. All students were invited to submit entries that reflected in
some way upon this year’s theme, "Growth". Carrie’s
prize-winning construction was a sculpture of a woman encrusted in Chinese
herbs and plants.
Send Your Old Textbooks to India
PCOM is accepting gently used textbooks to be donated to the Acupuncture
Institute of Ananda Nagar in India. This college lacks many of the teaching
resources we in America take for granted, including classrooms, clinical
facilities and supplies, textbooks, models, etc. Pacific College has kindly
donated some texts from its library and bookstore, and encourages any
interested students to donate their used textbooks as well. We are specifically
looking for texts on acupuncture point location and OM theory. Any and
all contributions are greatly appreciated and may be dropped off in the
front administration office.
