Pacific College Externship Descriptions - San Diego Campus

If you have not worked at an off-site clinic before, you are in for an excellent learning experience, one that very well may change the way you practice and your views of yourself as a healer. It may also challenge and enhance your views on the efficacy and place of our medicine.

At the off site clinics we come in contact with, and work alongside, other medical practitioners. How we conduct ourselves directly affects the perception that they may form about our profession.

Work at the off-site clinics is at times different from the work at PCOM clinic. Sometimes we work under cramped conditions, and don't always have the administrative support that we are used to or would like to have. Some set-up of tables and equipment may be needed, requiring us to work as a team and help each other to work fast and efficiently. Since there is no access to herbal remedies, it is an opportunity to sharpen your psychomotor skills and become very effective with your needle technique. Some locations are inundated with patients, while others experience a smaller patient load. At all locations, we have a very grateful clientele, avid to learn more about our profession and willing to cooperate with our recommendations.

General information:

  • All off-site students and supervisors are required to have a PCOM photo ID. Please contact Mark in the admin. or clinic office to have your picture taken.
  • All off-site students and supervisors need a current TB test. On your first visit you will get the skin test and then two days later you will need to go back to get it checked. The cost is $11. Please phone the center first to confirm their hours of operation. Finally, please give a copy of your card to Mary Orr, Director of Clinical Services.

The County administers the test at several Public Health Centers:

    • 3851 Rosecrans W/F 7:30am - 11:30am (619) 692-8600
    • 5202 University M/W 1 - 4 pm (619) 229-7990
    • 2440 Grand Ave (PB) M/T/W/F 8-11am, 1-4pm (858) 581-4300
    • 104 Barnes (Oceanside) T/Th 1 - 6 pm (760) 967-4401
  • Orientation is usually done during the first hour of your first shift. The length will vary depending on the site, so check your designated site for the exact meeting time. Please do not be late or miss your orientation.
  • Parking can be difficult, so carpooling is encouraged. Allow plenty of time to park and find your site the first time your shift meets.
  • Note that the time for your off site shift may differ slightly from the time of the regular shifts at PCOM clinic.
  • Dress code is the same as in PCOM clinic - a white lab coat and closed toes shoes are required. Comfortable professional clothing is recommended.
  • Evaluation of students and supervisors follows the same schedule as the PCOM clinic.

This is a very popular clinic and the pace is fairly fast. We have lots of senior patients whose chief complaint is often pain, although they often also have underlying complex medical problems. This clinic provides a great opportunity to see the effects of acupuncture when administered frequently, since most patients are willing to come to the clinic 3 times per week. Student volunteers are always welcome to assist in this clinic.

These are busy clinics for the Homeless and the underserved run in collaboration with UCSD medical students and volunteer UCSD faculty physicians. The clinics offer a great opportunity to interact with western medical professionals and future physicians. We see a wide variety of medical problems on a population ranging from young adults to old age. At the site in PB on Wednesday nights, we are presently collaborating with a research project on the efficacy of acupuncture dental anesthesia. There has been no problem with crime at the churches or parking vicinity. People are very friendly and seem to look after each other. The atmosphere is definitely upbeat and relaxed.

San Diego Hospice provides the unique opportunity of working with terminally ill patients in collaboration with physicians, nurses, social workers, chaplains and bereavement counselors in a beautiful facility administering palliative medical care. The Hospice has a department of complimentary medicine using aromatherapy, touch for healing techniques and acupuncture. A research project is currently being conducted on the efficacy of TCM on the Quality of Life of terminally ill patients. PCOM students at SD Hospice will be asked to collaborate with this research project on an ongoing basis. The general work at Hospice is both challenging and rewarding. The pace is slow and relaxed with the emphasis on the quality of time spent with each patient. A bereavement counselor is provided a few times per rotation to help the PCOM students work through grief and other emotional issues that arise as a result of working with the terminally ill. Students may work in pairs, but are expected to be able to work fairly autonomously. At the end of the rotation the students as a group give an oral presentation to the medical staff. There is a good and inexpensive cafeteria at the site.

UCSD Rimac

La Jolla, CA 92093

At the second light, turn Right and park anywhere along the street leading to the Hang Gliding Port and the ocean. Go back and cross Torrey Pines Rd into the parking lot of UCSD campus. Continue straight through the parking lot and up a small dirt trail until you meet the paved walking path. Continue walking east past a few buildings until you find the RIMAC Building. Allow at least 30 minutes to park and walk to the building on your first visit.

If you DO have a UCSD Parking Permit: Take Hwy 5, exit Genesee going west, going over the freeway and up the hill. At the top of the hill, turn Left (south) on North Torrey Pines Rd. Turn Left on Northpoint Drive (the first stoplight). Then turn Right at the first Stop sign. Turn into the first parking lot on your left. The RIMAC building is across the parking lot towards the right, as you walk up the slope of the parking lot. It is the first building (with huge glass windows) on the left. There are some benches and a coffee cart in front of the entrance. You may not see the building at first when you park, due to the eucalyptus trees, but be sure that "all paths lead to RIMAC".

This clinic serves UCSD athletes. PCOM students have the opportunity to treat many types of musculo-skeletal injuries alongside physical therapists and athletic trainers. The pace is fast and the work is very focused on specific problems. Pacific College interns use acupuncture to help rehabilitate post-operative injuries, sports injuries and athletic performance by increasing range of motion, muscle strength and tissue healing potential. Students average 3-5 treatments per shift learning Matt’s unique combination of Sports Medicine, Chinese Medicine and Kinesiology. Treatments vary from 15 minutes to one hour. An excellent opportunity to learn musculoskeletal assessment and treatment techniques, this site is for interns only. To be selected for this site, students must pass a required examination.
