Pacific College Alumni Profile - Laura Senecal:

Laura Senecal grew up in Hawaii.   Her initial interest in Oriental medicine began as a young girl when her parents would take her into Korea Town to visit the acupuncturist.   "Especially for my grandmother, it was simply the way to remain healthy," said Laura. "As a young adult studying Psychobiology at UC Santa Cruz, traditional medicines became more appealing and intrinsically made more sense to me."   Laura attended Pacific College of Oriental Medicine's San Diego campus from 1998 to 2002.   While here, she represented the school as Student Council President, an experience she describes as, "most humbling."

Two years ago, she started a corporation called The Inner Path: A Holistic Center For Family Health, to house a collaborative healthcare center for the Kensington/Talmadge community. The focus of her practice is working with women and families through pregnancy, childbirth and labor.   It is located in a historic home near the eastern end of Kensington.   Three treatment rooms are converted throughout the week to hold classes such as "Birthing From Within," "HypnoBirthing," neighborhood health talks, Chinese medical language classes, continuing education seminars and the Alumni Grand Rounds.

"This practice is more a collaborative effort by all of the practitioners involved, not only myself, and without them The Inner Path would be a very different place," said Laura.

She and her husband are currently expecting their first child, and Laura will be taking a break from clinical practice.   She will still manage The Inner Path, "continuing our vision of providing family health care and offering our community of professionals a place to come together," she said.

PCOM prepared her for working in the field by teaching her the realities of patient care: from introducing diversity of patients through the clinic, to teaching the flexibility of medicine (for example, working with physicians using different modalities).   "Many teachers are in their own private clinics, which also keeps it real," she said. "I know that the education offered at PCOM is taken seriously. There are people there designated to improve curriculum, keeping PCOM on the forefront of our medicine, and remaining a political advocate for TCM practitioners.   I am certain that aspiring physicians will have an education built on solid ground."

Congratulations, Laura, on your success!
