The Psyche in Chinese Medicine
This extensive workshop will present a panoramic view of the psyche in Chinese medicine, exploring the nature and functions of the Shen, Hun, Po, Yi and Zhi. Particular attention will be dedicated to the nature and functions of the Hun and its relationship with the Shen. Giovanni will discuss the nature and effects of the emotions on the psyche. While rooted in the classics, this lecture will present new views of the emotions in Chinese medicine in a thought-provoking way. For example, the nature and effects of guilt and shame will be discussed, two emotions that are not mentioned in Chinese medicine books (ancient or modern). The workshop will a present the etiology, pathology and treatment of depression, anxiety and insomnia.
The Extraordinary Channels
The eight extraordinary vessels are an essential component of the channel system in acupuncture. No acupuncturist can treat without the knowledge of the extraordinary channels. They provide a deeper level of treatment for complex conditions and are the link between the Pre-Natal and Post-Natal Qi. Far from being Secondary Channels as they are sometimes called, they determine the development of the main channels from the moment of conception

Dampness and Phlegm are two extremely common pathogenic factors encountered in the clinic. Both Dampness and Phlegm result from a dysfunction in the metabolism of fluids and our Western lifestyle, with its irregular diet, stress and overwork.
Dampness and Phlegm are complex pathogenic factors with many different manifestations and a complicated pathology. Dampness and Phlegm are notoriously difficult to treat because of their very nature. Their clinical manifestations are numerous and varied, ranging from pimples to schizophrenia; from fungal infections to cancer. Dampness and Phlegm obstruct the functions of the internal organs and inhibit the effectiveness of the treatment. It is often necessary to eliminate Dampness and Phlegm before one can supplement the patient's Qi or address constitutional imbalance.
The seminar will also include an overview of the movement of Qi in the Triple Burner, an essential factor in the pathology of Dampness and Phlegm. The discussion of the treatment strategies will focus on the point combinations that promote the movement, transformation and excretion of fluids. However, the herbal treatment will also be discussed and extensive handouts will be given.
As an added bonus, the seminar will also feature Giovanni’s highly regarded workshop on tongue diagnosis, focusing on signs of dampness, phlegm, and blood stasis.
