Chicago Library
Pacific's newly remodeled library provides over 800 square feet conducive to study and research. A valuable resource for students and alumni of Pacific, the college's Library is also open to health professionals and interested lay people by special arrangement.

Holdings
There are many resources available in Pacific's Library, including journals of Eastern & Western medicine, books, audio tapes and video tapes. The Library also boasts student research papers and a variety of articles and newsletters in the vertical files. Required and recommended texts for each semester are available in the Library at the Reference/Circulation Desk.

Equipment & Resources
There is easy access to 4 PCs, 1 VCR/TV, and a printer. Computer use is on a first-come first-served basis.

E-mail Services
Pacific College provides its students with free e-mail accounts and service. To obtain your password, please complete an application in the College's Administration Office.

Borrowing Privileges
A PCOM student ID is required to check out Library materials. Books (a maximum of 3 at a time) may be checked out for two weeks. Materials may be renewed once, either by stopping by or calling. Up to 2 audio and video tapes may be checked out at a time for one week. Materials may be returned to the Library or the drop box located outside the Library.

Fines for Overdue Materials:
Books: 0.25 per day
Audio & video tapes: 0.50 per day

*Weekends are included in the calculation of fines. Replacement Fees are $15.00 plus the cost of replacing the item. Unpaid fines may result in denial of registration, transcripts or other administrative requests.

Through the San Diego campus's Online Catalog, users are able to look up books, journals, videos, reference papers and more. In addition, circulation borrowing records including borrowers, checkout and returns are also a part of this system.

New York Library
Pacific's newly remodeled library provides over 1600 square feet conducive to study and research. A valuable resource for students and alumni, the college's Library is open to health professionals and interested lay people by special arrangement.

Holdings
There are many resources available in Pacific's New York campus Library, including journals and articles on Eastern & Western medicine, books, herb samples, course syllabi, audio and video tapes.

Equipment & Resources
There are currently 4 IBMs, 4 Macintosh computers, VCR/TV, printer and Xerox machine available for use in the library. Computer use is on a first-come first-served basis. There is also a computer work study assistant available at regular hours in the Library to help students with questions. Computer training is available to students, staff and faculty by appointment. The Library's Health Information Literacy instructional series includes a Web based self study program of brief tutorials, and class presentations or hands-on session conducted each semester for clinical research and advanced courses in the curriculum. They are designed to help students develop information access skills and to write research papers.

  2. Library Online Catalog: PCOM Tutorial
    This tutorial provides instructions to search the catalog via the Internet or the Library.
    New students are required to view a brief 3 min. tour in the Library, and are given "How to Use the Library and the Online Catalog" guide at Orientation.

      This 8 minute tour includes sequential screens of search features in MedlinePlus

    • PubMed:
      This tutorial was designed by the National Library of Medicine to meet the needs of the general public.

      Includes several specific tutorials and My NCBI

    • Evaluating Internet Health Information: A Tutorial from the National Library of Medicine
      This tutorial teaches you how to evaluate the health information that you find on the Web. It is about 16 minutes long. The tutorial runs automatically, but you can also use the navigation bar at the bottom of the screen to go forward, backward, pause, or start over.

    • Understanding Medical Words: Tutorial
      A brief Health Literacy medical terminology tutorial to help patients and students understand commonly used terms and improve clinical communication. You learn how to put together parts of medical words. Also includes quizzes.

Pacific College of Oriental Medicine Library - San Diego Campus

San Diego Library
The college’s three campus libraries (Chicago, New York and San Diego) have a cumulative collection of nearly 30,000 titles of print and non-print materials, in multiple formats. In 2001, the San Diego campus library moved into a new 2,500 square feet remodeled wing of the campus. This modern facility provides a setting conducive to studying, research, and using Internet accessible computers. It has an invaluable collection, including over 17,500 books, journals, research papers, media, and anatomical models. The scope of the collection includes Traditional Oriental and Chinese Medicine, Acupuncture, Herbology, Basic and Biological Sciences, Complementary Medicine, Massage Therapy, Consumer Health, Chinese Medical Classics, the Pacific Symposium lectures and special collections in Chinese including Dr. Richard Yeh’s private medical classics, materials in Japanese and Korean and other donated private collections. The library supports the educational, clinical and research programs for students, faculty, and alumni. It is also open to community health professionals and interested consumers and patients.

Holdings
There are many resources available in Pacific’s library, including journals of Eastern & Western medicine, books, audiotapes and videotapes. The print collections currently include over 17,500 books, journals (50 current titles), a non-print collection containing over 4,500 items of educational software i.e. CDs, DVDs, videos and audiotapes. The library has a Special Collection of Chinese language monographs, a variety of articles, and research papers written by masters and doctoral students. Doctoral Capstone dissertations are available for reference use in the library. Equipment & Resources
The computer media lab has 11 workstations. There are currently 9 PCs and 2 Macintosh computers, 2 VCR/TVs, an audio tape player, and copier/printer for use in the library. Computer use is on a first-come first-served basis. A library assistant and/or Work Study student assistant are available during regular library hours to help students with questions. Health Information Literacy instruction is provided in several PCOM classes. In addition, computer tutorials for database access are available online and special assistance/training is provided to students, staff and faculty.
