Somer received her BA in Sociology from the University of Hawaii at Hilo in
2004 and then moved to San Diego where she obtained her MA in Sociology from
SDSU in 2007. While interested in all aspects of sociology and the social
sciences, Somer has focused much of her emphasis on the growing field of
medical sociology. She is also a big fan of gender studies and popular
culture. Somer began teaching as a graduate student in 2005 and became an
adjunct instructor at Southwestern College (Chula Vista, CA) in 2008 after
completing a yearlong internship for Community College Teaching (SDICCCA).
Since then, she has had the opportunity to teach a variety of sociology and
psychology classes both on line and in person. Somer¹s goal for every class
and every topic is to make the subject matter relevant and engaging for each
student using research, the media, and every day examples. In her free time,
she loves to hang out with her husband Thomas (PCOM graduate), their baby
boy, and their 5 year old puggle named Tater Tot.
